  1. Confidentiality in research refers to the treatment of data collected during the course of the study. It protects the identity of the participants which engage in the study and prevent sensitive information from being disclosed into public setting. Therefore when conducting a research the researcher must ensure that the participants remain anonymous.

  2. Confidentiality in Research means how researchers excise due care when dealing with the data and ensuring that the participants identity is anonymous. The Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) postulated that:“The confidentiality of information supplied by research subjects and the anonymity of respondents must be respected.”

Confidentiality can be maintained when researchers clarify the steps they will take to ensure protection of respondents’ identities Participants should be also aware that they are entitled to reject particular forms of data-gathering (e.g. video cameras). Researchers should not include the participants’ names; the participants should not be made identifiable in reports and researchers should not discuss the participants identity with no one at all.

  4. My understanding of confidentiality is the process of protecting an individual’s privacy. A researcher’s obligation is to protect. However, confidentiality is concerned with who has the right of access to the data provided by the participants. Anonymity refers to concealing the identities of participants in all documents resulting from the research; therefore, emphasizing the importance of respecting the anonymity and privacy of research participants should consider the issue of the anonymity of research participants

  5. It is very unethical and unprofessional to give away confidential information of the research participants. If so be the case, then that researcher does not have the capacity to carry out such research at all.

Professionalism is also key to uphold confidentiality.

  6. confidentiality is of utmost importance, as the participants identity should never be revealed. One must respect the participants and should never disclose sensitive information. It is unethical and unprofessional and the participants may never feel comfortable to participate in any kind of research ever.

  7. As I see it, confidentiality is when a researcher disclose information in consistent with the agreement that he or she has with a participant. Therefore, the researcher will be trusted to keep certain aspect of the information received as a secret, as such; he or she will not be expected to reveal the information to others in any way that is inconsistent to an initial agreement with the participant.
Anonymity refers to when a researcher withhold the identity of his or her participants in his or her findings of the research. One has to follow the correct procedures to ensure that confidentiality and anonymity is maintained during the research process. One can do this by: using study codes on data documents, keeping written or typed information out of the reach of others (use of codes or lock), not collecting information such as names, home address and email address, and by finding a way to properly dispose or delete information regarding the study.

This means, ensuring that someone’s research does not become viewed by unnecesary persons as this may have a negative impact on the individual conducting the research in terms of the criticism. In terms of maintaining confidentiality of data and anonomity in an individual’s research recievers of the information can conceal the identification of the participant for continued maintainance.

In a nutshell; the definitions are:
    *Anonymity refers to concealing the identities of participants in all documents resulting from the research;
*Confidentiality is concerned with who has the right of access to the data provided by the participants.

As it pertains to research, this simply mean shielding the uniqueness of persons who have participated in the research process. The anonymity of participants can be maintain throughout our data analysis by using codes or numbers to represent the individuals or entities involved.

Confidentiality can be describe as the protection of personal information. One most important elements of confidentiality is that its helps to build and develop trust. Confidentiality of data and anonymity of participants can be maintained during the research process by making data “anonymous” means removing the individual’s name and any other research items that will help to identify the person.

  13. I strongly believe that anonymity and confidentiality of participants are imperative in carrying out a research because it helps to build a level of trust between the researcher and the participants of the research. This level of trust will be crucial in determining the quality of data the researcher will be able to collect from the participants.

Furthermore, persons want to know that if they reveal particular information to a researcher, that they can rest assure that no one can trace it back to them. Researchers are able to maintain this level of confidentiality and anonymity in the ways; they treat people’s information by using pseudonyms for participant’s names and location of the research. Researcher can also use other practices, such as changing the characteristics of participants for example presenting the participant as male or female.

  14. Nadia, that is excellent. I agree with you 100%. Pseudonyms are a good alternative. Nonetheless, I believe that trust has to be built between the participant and the researcher before they have taken part in the research as respondents. The participant should be clear on the safety and security measures to maintain confidentiality and anonymity. After which, they will decide if whether they will be apart of the research or not.

In ensuring that confidentiality is maintained in the research we are not to discuss at anytime personal information obtained or distribute information that will infringe on the rights of the participants. To ensure anonymity of the participants I do not use their true identity I assign a label to identify the respondents in my research.

  16. Confidentiality is the manner in which researchers seek to protect the rights of others by withholding respondents identity. Researchers must seek to display honesty and trustworthy individuals. The right to remain anonymous should be respected. Confidentiality of data and anonymity of participants can be maintained during the research process by ensuring that appropriate precautions are taken in order to protect the confidentiality of participants’ data. For example names and location of participants should be removed or withheld from the public.

  17. Confidentiality in research speaks to ethical procedures which the researcher follows in conducting his or her study. Presently, there are documents that are vital importance to the subjects that are studied such as students’ names, institution/organization’s name, students’ profile, report cards etc. In ensure confidentiality of the participants kept in anonymity, one can avoid using participants’ name and the institution/organization which he or she ascribed to.

  18. Privacy in research refers to the confidentiality afforded to participants in the research. A participant or subject is more likely to provide honest responses when their identity is not going to be exposed. There should be safety nets put in place to guarantee confidentiality. The only amount of personal data that should be collected for the research is the minimal amount needed to insure a proper sampling of the population. Personal identifiable information should not be collected nor maintained unless absolutely necessary.

  20. confidentiality is extremely important as a researcher. It is important to keep individual’s identity away from the public. One of the main reason why individuals are interested in partaking in researches is because they are of the opinion that their identity will be safe. Therefore, it is within the integrity of every researcher to be cognizant of participants’ information and their identity to be anonymous.

  21. Wes Jamison, (n.d) states that “Confidentiality can be defined as an explicit or implied guarantee by a researcher to a respondent in social science research whereby the respondent is confident that any information provided to the researcher cannot be attributed back to that respondent. Furthermore, the assurance of confidentiality carries with it the additional implication that non-researchers cannot discover the respondent’s identity. Thus, confidentiality is an active attempt by researchers to remove any trace of respondent identities from the records.”
It is of great importance to keep the data collected and anonymity of participants confidential as it is not every individual likes his or her problem to be discussed in such a medium. These participants will feel secure and more comfortable to work cooperatively to assist the researcher once they have gain confidence in the researcher. However the aspect of confidentiality and anonymity will be maintained throughout the research with the use of symbols( numbers or letters) to identify the name of the members in the sample population as well not indicating the location in which the sample group was study. To be an effective researcher to carry out an effective research paper; confidentiality must begins with you as a researcher.

In my opinion confidentiality in research is is keeping the privacy of an individual(s) who take part in the research process. “The confidentiality of information supplied by research subjects and the anonymity of respondents must be respected.”(ESRC -The Economic and Social Research Council REF, p.1). It is the right of an individual to remain anonymous and should be respected unless a clear understanding to the contrary has been reached. Researchers have the responsibility to ensure appropriate precautions to protect the confidentiality of participants’ data. The researcher should observe the individual’s rights and therefore keep the information as well as the participant private.

When carrying out good ethical research the researchers have an obligation to spell out exactly what they mean by anonymity and confidentiality to research participants in advance of the research occurring so they may decide whether or not to participate. Researchers also have the responsibility to ensure appropriate precautions to protect the confidentiality of participants’ data.

Even if the information is made public, the participant’s name, address or telephone number etc (no personal information that can be used to identify the participants) is made public.
One way of ensuring that participants are anonymous when conducting a research is by not requesting any personal information such as name, telephone number, address etc of the participants. This ways no one will be able to trace any information back to the participants.

The term confidentiality may be defined as, spoken or written in confidence; charge with secrets while anonymity is defines as, unknown name, of unknown authorship. During the research process, confidentiality of data and anonymity of a participants can be maintained by ensuring the separation of data from identifiable individuals and storing the code linking data to individuals securely. Also, researcher should endeavor to protect their identity of the research participants through various processes designed to anonymise them.

Confidentiality as spoken or written in confidence; charged with secrets, while anonymity is defined as unknown name, of unknown authorship. In the ethics literature, confidentiality is commonly viewed as similar to the principle of privacy. This principle is integral to our societal beliefs that individuals matter and that individual have the right for their affairs to be private. The notion of confidentiality and anonymity is invariably raised and discussed with research participants prior to their participation in research. What researchers can do is to ensure they do not disclose identifiable information about participants and to try to protect the identity of research participants through various processes designed to anonymise them.

We must be mindful that the main aim of carrying out a research is to provide answers or solutions that will benefit individuals, groups or organizations. Disclosing personal/sensitive information about the participants compromises the data, discredits findings and make them ineligible for general reference or use. A breech of confidentially is not only unethical, it is illegal. (Human Rights Act 1998)
Confidentiality in a research can be maintained by :
    – Omitting personal information such as names addresses or anything that would identify and individual or group.
    – Keep data collected secure and away from public eyes
    – Avoid discussing the research with anyone before findings are published.

When researchers obtain information with a promise of confidentiality, they presuppose an ethical obligation that is central to respect participants and the integrity of the research project. Breaches of confidentiality may harm the participant or the trust relationship between the researcher and the participant. In saying this I believe that researcher can maintain the confidentiality of data and anonymity of participants during the research process by removing the contributor’s correct name and use code names. Also practice the use of encryption and destroy documents that are not needed, thus limiting access to identifiable information.

Confidentiality of data and anonymity is collecting the data in a way that no one will be able to recognize the name of the student or the name of the school. However, one can protect that information by using variables to replace the name of students and school. In completing my research i will practice confidentiality because participant privacy should be secured.
